Specimen Requirements
Container Type: EDTA (Lavender Top)
NOTE: Patients with platelets that clump, collect both an EDTA (lavender top) AND a Sodium Citrate (blue top).
Specimen Type: Whole blood EDTA and peripheral blood smears.
Preferred Volume: Tube at least 1/3 full
Emergency Minimum Volume: 0.50 mL
Specimen Processing: Whole blood EDTA (lavender top) and 2 peripheral blood smears are required if overnight transport to lab. Prefer to receive specimen within 12 hours. Store and transport refrigerated.
Unacceptable Conditions: Clotted specimens. Grossly hemolyzed.
