Specimen Requirements
Container Type: Lithium Heparin (Green Top) or Serum Separator (Gold Top)
Specimen Type: Plasma or Serum
Preferred Volume: 1 mL
Emergency Minimum Volume: 0.3 mL
Collection Procedure: Note if patient has been fasting.
Specimen Processing: Separate serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection by centrifugation. Keep upright and do not remove stopper. Handle anaerobically at all times to minimize exposure to air during collection, transport and storage. Aliquot serum or plasma into a separate tube if parent tube does not have a gel barrier. Store and transport refrigerated.
Unacceptable Conditions: Hemolyzed specimens. Specimens not separated from the cells within 2 hours. EDTA Plasma (Lavender Top)

Remarks
Hemolysis will cause elevated potassium. Prolonged contact with the cell clot may also cause elevated potassium, as well as cause decreased glucose. Reference ranges differ between serum and plasma specimens due to clot formation in serum.
