Remarks

Hemolysis will cause elevated potassium values.  Prolonged contact with the cell clot may also increase potassium, as well as cause decreased glucose.  Reference ranges differ between serum and plasma specimens due to clot formation in serum.  Total Protein concentration is 0.4 to 0.8 gm/dL lower when sample is collected from a patient situated in the recumbent position rather than upright.  Direct exposure from sunlight can decrease bilirubin by 50% within 1 hour.
