Specimen Requirements
Container type: CSF sterile plastic tube.
Specimen Type: CSF
Preferred Volume: 1 mL
Emergency Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL
Collection Procedure: If multiple sterile tubes are collected, tube #3 should be sent for total cell count and differential.
Specimen Processing: Transport ASAP. Fluids delayed more than 2 hours should be refrigerated to a maximum of 24 hours.
Unacceptable Condition: Clotted specimens or specimens that have been at room temperature for 24 hours.

Remarks
Cell counts will be attempted on all fluids sent. However, specimen volume and quality may affect or prevent testing (i.e. specimens with small clots will be tested and results reported with a disclaimer that results may be affected, but specimens that are fully clotted cannot be counted).
