Test Code LAB269 BODY FLUID CULTURE WITH GRAM STAIN

Important Note

This culture includes gram stain, aerobic, and anaerobic cultures.

This test is intended for synovial fluid, pleural fluid, peritoneal fluid, bile, pericardial fluid, amniotic fluid, and fluid from the cul-de-sac.  CSF should be ordered as a CSF culture.  Any other aspirates, abscesses, semen, or fluid from drainage tubes should be ordered as a deep wound culture.

Specimen Requirements

Container Type: Sterile leakproof plastic container. Capped syringes only. 
Specimen Type: Body fluid
Preferred Volume: 1 mL
Emergency Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL
Patient Prep: All are physician-collected into appropriate sterile container.
Collection Procedure: Anaerobic culture is also performed and charged on all body fluids.
Specimen Processing: Transport immediately at room temperature. 
Required Patient Info: Specimen source.
Stability: Room Temp 1 day, Refrigerated 1 day, Frozen (-20 øC) Unacceptable
Unacceptable Condition: Samples received in syringes with needles attached. Request luer caps from lab and replace needle with caps while maintaining sterility.
