Specimen Requirements
Prenatal Profile Complete with HIV, Oregon form not required.
HIV Screen, additional testing may be reflexed depending on the results of this test. An additional fee may be added.
Hepatitis C Antibody is not part of this profile and needs to be ordered separately..
Container Type: EDTA (Lavender Top) x 2, Blood Bank EDTA (Pink Top) & Serum Separator (Gold Top) or Plain Serum Tube (Red Top)
Specimen Type: EDTA Whole Blood x 3 (2 purple & 1 pink) & Serum
Preferred Volume: 4 mL serum, 10 mL EDTA whole blood (2 lavender top tubes & 1 pink top) and slides if greater than 24 hrs to lab. HIV: EDTA tube 3 mL whole blood or if spinning down, 1.5 mL of plasma.
Emergency Minimum Volume: 2 mL serum, 1 full EDTA (lavendar top) and HIV: 1 EDTA (lavendar top) 2.5 mL whole blood or 1.3 mL plasma
Collection Procedure: Draw 1 large Pink top EDTA, 2 lavendar EDTA and 1 serum tube.
Includes ABO/Rh, Antibody Screen, CBC, Hepatitis B surface antigen, Syphilis Screen and Rubella.
Specimen Processing:
CBC: Prefer to receive specimen (lavender top tube) within 12 hours of collection and refrigerated.
ABO Rh & Antibody Screen: Transport at room temerature same day. If not transported to Lab same day, store refrigerated. Do not separate plasma. Label for Blood Bank.
Serum Tube: Spin as soon as possible (allow to clot minimum 20 minutes) and refrigerate.
HIV EDTA (lavendar top): Separate plasma from cells as soon as possible by centrifugation, or not to exceed 2 hours. Aliquot plasma to labeled tube and rubber band them together. Store and transport refrgerated.
Required Patient Info: Label on tube must contain full patient name and date of birth and must match requisition and to include date, time and initials of who drew that sample.
Limitations: HIV Antibody Screen requires separate order and special handling. HIV samples will be rejected if whole blood EDTA is not spun within 2 hours or if serum is received.
