Specimen Requirements

Container Type: Lithium Heparin (Green Top) or Serum Separator (Gold Top) AND Sterile Urine Container
Specimen Type: Plasma or Serum AND Urine, random
Preferred Volume: 1 mL plasma or serum AND 10 mL Urine
Emergency Minimum Volume: 0.3 mL plasma or serum AND 1 mL Urine
Collection Procedure: Collect a blood sample and collect a random urine specimen in leakproof plastic urine container with no additives. Preference is that these are collected simultaneously. Specimens can be collected within 24 hours of each other. Avoid hemolysis.
Specimen Processing: Separate serum or plasma from cells as soon as possible by centrifugation. Store and transport refrigerated. Aliquot a random urine specimen. Store and transport refrigerated. Centrifuge aliquots before testing.
