Specimen Requirements
Container Type: Lithium Heparin (Green Top) or Serum Separator (Gold Top)
Specimen Type: Plasma or Serum
Preferred Volume: 1 mL
Emergency Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL
Specimen Processing: Separate serum or plasma from cells as soon as possible by centrifugation. Remove the serum or plasma from the cells, clot or gel as soon as possible and aliquot into a separate tube. Store and transport refrigerated. Protect specimen from light.
Unacceptable Conditions: Hemolyzed specimens. Grossly Lipemic specimens.

Direct exposure from sunlight can decrease bilirubin by 50% within 1 hour. Total Protein concentration is 0.4 to 0.8 gm/dL lower when sample is collected from a patient situated in the recumbent position rather than upright.
