Specimen Requirements

Container Type: Lithium Heparin (Green Top) or Serum Separator (Gold Top) AND Sterile Urine Container
Specimen Type: Plasma or Serum AND Urine, random
Preferred Volume: 1 mL plasma or serum; 5 mL random urine
Emergency Minimum Volume: 0.3 mL plasma or serum; 1 mL random urine
Collection Procedure: Collect a blood sample AND Collect a random urine specimen in leakproof plastic urine container with no additives.
Specimen Processing: Separate serum or plasma from cells as soon as possible by centrifugation. Store and transport refrigerated. Aliquot a random urine specimen. Store and transport refrigerated. Centrifuge aliquots before testing.

Unacceptable Conditions: Urine specimens contaminated with fecal material
