Specimen Requirements
Container Type: 2 Serum Separator (Gold Top) or 2 Plain Serum Tube (Red Top)
Specimen Type: Serum
Preferred Volume: 2 mL
Emergency Minimum Volume: 1.5 mL
Specimen Processing: Separate serum from cells as soon as possible by centrifugation. Store and transport refrigerated.
Limitations: Samples should not be taken from patients receiving therapy with high biotin doses (i.e. >5 mg/day) until at least 8 hours following the last biotin administration.

Additional Test Information
Testing should be used to assess for recent or past infection with Treponema pallidum or for routine prenatal screening.
Syphilis screening at St. Charles is performed using the reverse screening algorithm.
A reactive Syphilis Screen will reflex rapid plasma reagin (RPR).
A reactive RPR will reflex a send-out titer at an additional charge.
A nonreactive RPR will be followed up with a call to the provider for patient history to determine if further testing is needed.
