Important Note

The Meningitis/Encephalitis PCR Panel contains Herpes testing for Cerebral Spinal Fluid.

  1. Specify which virus or viruses you would like tested if on a dermal site.
  2. If testing for multiple viruses, submit a swab for each.
  3. If submitting a dermal source, include exact site.
  4. Do not order a Non-Respiratory Viral panel on dermal sources, excluding lip.
  5. When there is no viral transport media available, refrigerate until pick up.

Specimen Requirements

Container Type: See below
Specimen Type: Swab from cutaneous or mucocutaneous source submitted in UTM. 
Collection Procedure: Collect with FLOQ (nasopharyngeal) swab or larger CLASSICIQ swab (1 only) place into UTM (Universal Transport Media) and swirl vigorously. Leave swab in media.
Specimen Processing: Store and transport refrigerated.
Required Patient Info: Specimen source.
Stability: Room Temp unacceptable Refrigerated 8 days Frozen (-70 øC) If sample is frozen, it must be at -70 degrees.
Unacceptable Condition: Calcium alginate swabs, wood swabs, dry swabs, or swabs in gel media, and CSF, urine, stool, serum or plasma. Also, swabs collected after application of creams, ointments, lotions, ice, alcohol, Betadine solutuion, zinc, or following sitz baths. Swab must be placed in UTM after collection.

Remarks

For urine, stool or source, order VIRUS CULTURE.  For Herpes simplex encephalitis, order Herpes Simplex Virus by PCR. Specimen requirement: 1 mL CSF. This test is specific for Herpes simplex virus only It cannot be used to determine presence or absence of other viruses.
