Important Note

DO NOT ADD ON: This test cannot be ordered as an add on test, once the tubes are spun down, and the special processing required.  See Specimen Requirements for more information.

Ionized calcium specimens will not be transported via STAT courier when the anticipated total time from collection to result is less than 30 minutes. Use of a STAT courier in these situations may introduce delays that exceed specimen stability limits and could compromise result accuracy.

Specimen Requirements

Container Type: Lithium Heparin (Green Top)
Specimen Type: Heparinized whole blood, DO NOT CENTRIFUGE OR UNCAP
Preferred Volume: 4 mL
Minimum Volume: 0.9 mL
Collection Procedure: Collect a FULL tube. DO NOT CENTRIFUGE OR UNCAP
Specimen Processing: Keep anaerobic by not removing cap. Send full, whole blood tube immediately to the Lab. If greater than 2 hours to lab, send on wet ice or refrigerated.
Unacceptable Conditions: Centrifuged or uncapped specimen.
Alternate Specimens: 1 mL whole blood drawn in a balanced heparinized blood gas syringe. Sample tube must be filled to capacity.
