Specimen Requirements
Container Type: Lithium Heparin (Green Top) or Serum Separator (Gold Top)
Specimen Type: Plasma or Serum
Preferred Volume: 1 mL each tube
Emergency Minimum Volume: 0.3 mL each tube
Collection Procedure: Draw Cortisol immediately before, 30 minutes post and 60 minutes post IV injection of cosyntropin (synthetic ACTH). Procedure should be performed under physician or nurse supervision.
Specimen Processing: Separate serum or plasma from cells as soon as possible by centrifugation. Store and transport refrigerated. Clearly label specimens with Baseline, 30 min and 60 min, and times of draw. CORTISOL test will be performed on each sample, not to be confused with ACTH Level.
Limitations: Cosyntropin must be ordered by physician from pharmacy. Injections are to be given by physician or nurse.
