Specimen Requirements

Container Type: 24-hour Urine Container, Dark Plastic. 10 mL of 6N NaOH Additive.
Specimen Type: 24-hour urine collection.
Preferred Volume: 10 mL aliquot
Emergency Minimum Volume: 1 mL

Patient Prep: Give patient 24 HOUR URINE COLLECTION Form # F21982 with instructions to document time and date of collection and to return it to lab with entire urine collection.
Collection Procedure: Collect a 24-hour urine in the provided 24-hour urine container. Keep at room temperature during collection.
Specimen Processing: Aliquot 10 mL of a well-mixed 24-hour urine collection into a leakproof plastic urine container. Record collection time and total volume. Store and transport at room temperature. Adjust pH to greater than 8 with 6N NaOH just before testing. Centrifuge aliquots before testing.
Required Patient Info: Collection time period in hours and total volume in mL.
Alternate Specimens: It is acceptable to collect the specimen without the additive, DO NOT refrigerate during collection, and add 10uL 6N NaOH to 0.5mL of well mixed urine before analysis. Centrifuge if precipitates form. Assure pH is greater than 8 prior to analysis.
