Medical Necessity

Providers ordering a Aptima Vaginitis Assay by NAA panel, this test should for STD screening.  The one of the components “Gardnerella vaginalis (81513)” is not appropriate for a STD screening, patients must meet the medical necessity for Symptomatic individuals.  Please see sidebar "resource" for MEMO.  Contact Technical Manager with questions.

Specimen Requirements

Container Type: Aptima Multitest Swab Specimen Collection Kit (orange label)
Specimen Type: Vaginal fluid
Collection Procedure: Insert the swab about 2 inches past the introitus and gently rotate the swab for 10-30 seconds.  Immediately place the swab into the tranport tube and break off at scored line.  Tightly screw the the cap on the tube.
Specimen Processing: Store and transport at room temperature. Swab stable at room temp for up to 30 days.
Stability: Room Temp 30 days Refrigerated 30 days Frozen 90 days
Unacceptable Condition: Swabs submitted in media other than the Aptima Multitest swab and Multitest swabs received with punctured foil cap.
